Open ChatGPT in an incognito browser so it doesn’t track your cache and type: "best junk removal company in [your city]." If you’re not a junk removal company than type best (your service business).

Are you in the answer?

Most operators aren't. And here's the part that stings — most of their websites "look fine." Modern enough. Loads eventually. Phone number's right there at the top.

Nobody ranking you cares how it looks.

Search changed while you were on the truck

A growing share of your customers don't scroll a page of blue links anymore. They ask — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity — and they get one answer with a couple of names in it.

Those tools don't invent answers. They pull from live web pages and cite them. Your website is the raw material. If Google hasn't catalogued a page, AI can't cite it. Not listed means not eligible. Not eligible means invisible.

Old world: a weak site meant ranking #7 instead of #2. You still got scraps.

New world: you're either in the answer or you literally don't exist!

Three checks — do them today, takes five minutes

1. Google site:yourwebsite.com. Count what comes back. That's every page of yours Google has catalogued — your full inventory of pages eligible to show up anywhere, search results or AI answers. Eight pages? You're holding eight lottery tickets. The competitor with 80 is holding 80.

2. Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights. Free, Google's own tool. Look at the mobile score — that's your site the way a customer standing in a garage full of junk actually experiences it. Under 50 and they tapped back before it finished loading.

3. The ChatGPT test above. Ask it three different ways. If competitors keep showing up and you don't, the machines have already made up their mind about you.

What it looks like when the website pulls its weight

We just wrapped a rebuild and migration for JunkMD, a junk removal company in San Diego. Every number below is Google's own measurement — not ours:

  • Server response: 795 milliseconds → 116 milliseconds. Roughly 7x faster. Google's crawler measured both sites on the same scale, before and after.

  • Pages listed in Google: 68 → 133. Nearly double the inventory eligible to show up in search — or get cited in an AI answer.

  • Daily appearances in search: 1,289 → 1,940. Up 50%.

  • 204 old addresses migrated. Zero lost.

The new site scores 94/100 for mobile speed and 100/100 for SEO, and holds first-page positions for "junk removal san diego." San Diego. Not a soft market.

And the speed number isn't vanity. Someone standing in a cluttered garage on their phone is not waiting five seconds for your page. They tap back and call the next result. Speed is the difference between the lead hitting your quote form and the lead hitting your competitor's.

The part nobody warns you about

Here's what makes rebuilds dangerous: the new site almost never uses the same web addresses as the old one. Pages get renamed, merged, dropped. Google doesn't know any of that happened — it just knows the addresses it spent years cataloguing stopped working.

Rankings built over five years can evaporate in six weeks. The site looks better and the phone rings less. It's the single most common way a redesign quietly costs a business money — and most owners never connect the two.

JunkMD's migration moved 204 addresses through 135 verified forwarding rules and lost zero. That's not luck. That's inventory every address, map every one, verify every rule against a live page, then audit again after launch. If you ever rebuild your site — with us, with anyone — demand that process in writing.
